GIS makes a stronger presence in Punjab, India

The Government of Punjab took an important step towards strengthening the geospatial framework of the country by recently launching two state-specific GIS portals. The Punjab GIS and Village GIS portals are set to boost the efforts of the State Government in day to day governance as well as delivery of public utility services using GIS technology.

Finance and Planning Minister, Manpreet Singh Badal mentioned on the occasion that the portal https://vdpunjab.ncog.gov.in/login has more than 250 indicators of village Directory prepared by Economic and Statistical Organisation (ESO). This would be helpful for the comprehensive planning and development of the villages at the grass-root level.

He added that the portal https://punjab.ncog.gov.in/admin/gisModule includes key departments of the state government like Animal Husbandry, Canal, Census, Education, Health, Sewa Kendra, MPLAD, Tourism and Water Resources besides others. Mr. Badal envisions that both the portals will play an important role in the planning process in the state.

Both Mr. Anirudh Tewari, Additional Chief Secretary Governance Reforms and Mr. Abhishek Singh, President & CEO, NeGD, MeitY, Government of India emphasized on the need of integrating GIS and IT to help the government frame robust policies for the benefit of the people.

Dr. T P Singh, Director General, BISAG-N, MeitY, Government of India seconded the thought. He highly appreciated the efforts of the Punjab Government for creating the GIS portals.

Mr. Harvinder Singh, Joint Director, ESO and Dr. R K Setia, Project Leader said that the launching of these portals was a historic decision, and this will play an important role in ensuring comprehensive development of the State in an effective manner.
