Radiant Earth Foundation Elects Claudia Juech and Sives Govender to its Board of Directors

Radiant Earth Foundation has announced the appointment of Claudia Juech and Sives Govender to its Board of Directors. Juech and Govender bring a wealth of knowledge on strategy and an extensive international network that realizes machine learning and remote sensing to support vulnerable communities’ decision-making.

Claudia Juech is the founding CEO and a board member of the Cloudera Foundation, a non-profit organization working with partners to harness the power of data for social good. Juech is pioneering a foundation model that combines intellectual capital and private sector expertise with financial grants to help nonprofits realize impactful data capabilities.

She and her team identify and support large-scale, data-driven opportunities to address the world’s pressing challenges in any area of critical need, such as in health, the environment, economic inequality, education, and more. Previously, Juech was Associate Vice President at the Rockefeller Foundation, leading its Strategic Insights Division.

She was also the Vice President at DB Research, Deutsche Bank’s think tank for trends in business, society, and the financial markets. Juech is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Trustworthy Data Initiative, GovLab’s Global Advisory Group, and 100Kin10’s Strategic Advisory Committee.

She has a degree in information science from Cologne University of Applied Sciences and an International MBA from the University of Cologne. Sives Govender is a Research Group Leader in Spatial Information Systems at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in South Africa and Environmental Information System-Africa’s (EIS-Africa) director.

EIS-Africa is a pan African nonprofit organization promoting geospatial science and technology to support sustainable development in Africa. Govender also manages the biennial AfricaGIS conference and recently joined PlaceFund as an advisory Board member.

He has worked on numerous global to national geospatial science, technology, and Spatial Data Infrastructure related activities and projects, for over two decades. Govender holds a Masters in Social Policy with a specialization in GIS from the University of Durban-Westville (now UKZN) and a Post Graduate Diploma in Management Development from the University of Stellenbosch.

“I am really thrilled to have Claudia and Sives join us on the Board,” says Jerry Johnston, Chairman of the Board and leader of Deloitte’s Location Intelligence practice. “Claudia’s global experience in supporting and fostering the growth of initiatives that leverage data analytics and machine learning for international development will be invaluable as we grow. And Sives brings deep insight into the needs and opportunities for Radiant’s support across the African user community that will help us focus our efforts on their most acute needs.”

“I believe that we’ve only begun to scratch the surface on innovative ways to tackle international development challenges through machine learning and Earth observation data,” Juech says. “The transformative impact potential of Radiant Earth’s work drew me to the organization, and I am excited for the opportunity to participate in its groundbreaking pursuits.”

“It is an immense honor to join the Board of the Radiant Earth Foundation and serve amongst respected global leaders in the field of remote sensing and Machine Learning for Earth Observation,” says Govender.

“I have dedicated my professional career to supporting capacity building in the geospatial science and technology user communities in Africa. I see my role with Radiant Earth as promoting and expanding the awareness, uptake, and utilization of data analytics and ML for EO to support many of the key development drivers facing the African continent."

"I will also encourage the Radiant Earth Foundation to build upon existing African initiatives so as to deliver tangible impacts to the continent.” Juech and Govender join Johnston, along with Radiant Earth’s Executive Director and Chief Data Scientist, Hamed Alemohammad.

Other Board members include Radiant Earth Founder Anne Miglarese, now a program executive officer at Saildrone, Peter Rabley, partner and co-founder at PlaceFund, and Kass Green, president at Kass Green & Associates.
