On the occasion of 15th foundation day of Uttarakhand Space Application Centre (USAC), a one day capacity building training of the officials of the agricultural department on utilising geospatial technology in agriculture and horticulture sector was organised on Saturday, Pioneer reported.

Speaking on the occasion, the director of the USAC, M. P. S. Bisht said that in its journey of 15 years, the centre has successfully completed many important projects assigned by the state government to it.

He said that in the workshop the agriculture department officials would be informed about the use of the remote sensing and GIS techniques in pre harvesting and post harvesting assessment of production of crops. He expressed concern on decline in the area under crops in the mountainous regions of the state.

The bio diversity advisor of chief minister of Sikkim, Hemant Kumar Badola said that in recent years the international demand of the traditional agricultural producers of mountainous areas has increased.

The representative of the Mahalanobis National Crop Forecast Centre (MNCFC), New Delhi, Seema Sehgal gave a presentation of the crop forecasting by using remote sensing techniques. The scientist of Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), Abhishek Dandolia informed about use of remote sensing and geospatial techniques in mapping and assessment of crops.
