What is Internet of Things and Its Top Applications

In today’s world, the demand for devices that interconnect and function independently is rising. There is a need for a network that enables electronic devices to connect and communicate seamlessly.

IoT or Internet of Things is the network that enables this connection of devices via the internet and routers to exchange data and carry out their functions without the need for human interference. IoT enables the control and operations of multiple devices through the internet remotely with the help of a network infrastructure. The simplest example is WiFi and Bluetooth. These technologies help connect devices and share data amongst participants seamlessly.

IoT is a type of artificial intelligence that reduces human effort and interference in the transmission of data and carrying out of data operations across domains. It also enables autonomous control that, in turn, helps reduce labour to store, transmit, and study large amounts of data produced and shared amongst the devices connected on the IoT network.

Another great example is the windmills. The energy data collected from the windmills in remote regions is directly transmitted to the headquarters of energy companies in major metropolitan areas. This data is usually real-time and very accurate.

IoT integrates software, hardware, data, machine learning and pre-defined outcomes and results to perform functions that otherwise require human control. One of the first use of IoT can be traced back to the development of a Coca Cola machine in 1982 that was able to keep track of its inventory and know if the newly loaded beverages were cold. In 2019, after almost three decades, IoT is heavily integrated into our lives, and we use it in some way or the other multiple times a day.

Here are a few modern-day uses of IoT in various industries-

Education

IoT fills the gaps in the education industry by providing improved quality of education and reducing costs of transmitting large amounts of data across various educational institutions. Curriculums can be shared across the country with the help of IoT to create a standardised system of education.

Healthcare

Fitness devices and smartwatches help people monitor their health with the help of interconnected applications that can be downloaded onto devices. Not just this, IoT has helped reduce the turnaround time of patient care as doctors already have a brief report before patients reach the hospitals in ambulances. The treatments can be started much sooner with the help of IoT.

Energy

With the demand for energy rising, agencies are devising ways to reduce energy consumption or find alternatives to conventional nonrenewable energy sources. IoT helps monitor energy usage at all levels- from individual houses to grids that support whole cities. It helps assess trends in energy consumption and facilitates decision making.

Government

The development of public infrastructure and smart cities is enabled and facilitated by IoT. The management of armed forces and national security is also enhanced with the help of IoT. Management of resources and security is maximised with the help of inexpensive technology deployed across the country in an interconnected manner.

IoT is changing the way we do things. Anything that can be connected, should be connected. This disruptive breakthrough is the change the world needs.
